Last week I finally got to try Glasgow’s newest pizza joint, Pizza Punks! The bright pink neon signage draws attention on St Vincent Street & I think most people that pass by are intrigued to see inside & get a look at what they have to offer!
We were treated to beer expertise of Jules (I think everyone at the table was jealous of her job!). She had picked three beers to go with three Pizza Punks creations which Nick had rustled up. Okay, so beer & pizza on a school night? I was definitely up for that & was excited to see what was on the cards!
Ding ding ding! Round 1!
We began our beer & pizza journey with a refreshing light Czech beer called Pravha which is from the brewers of Staropramen. This was paired with a creamy panna pizza with chicken, lemon, thyme & scarmoza. This is the first time I’ve tried a pizza with a white base sauce, it won’t be the last. The light beer complimented the flavours of the pizza without washing them out.
Hold up, salmon pizza… Some of you may be offended by this concept but trust me, this pizza went down a treat! If you’re partial to a bit of seafood then you should 100% try this! The smoked salmon, capers, rocket & creme fraiche made this pizza unusual but super tasty. Out of all the beers we had on the night, Blue Moon was my favourite, it had citrus orange & coriander notes which was a perfect partner to the smoked salmon.
Third & finally, my favourite pizza of the night! Chipotle & chocolate pulled pork with jalapenos & grilled corn salsa… From that description, I was unable to contain myself & had to try it before the photo! This was spicy, full of flavour & had a unique taste that makes me pretty sure that I’m gonna ruin a perfectly good pork joint trying to recreate the taste. This was paired with the Franciscan Well Chieftain IPA (that’s Irish Pale Ale!). This was the heaviest beer of the night with notes of toffee & caramel, but it suited the strong flavours in the pulled pork.
From the pictures you can see just how crispy & charred the crusts are. The dough is made the day before & is gently proved to create a base that’s almost like a sour dough. This is what makes the crust so crusty!
Overall, the food was awesome, they played great music the whole night through & the staff were super friendly & made it a great experience!
Value for money: 7/10
