When you’re walking down Rose Street in Edinburgh, you pass by the pubs & bars unaware that hidden behind the facade of the bouncer & steamed up windows is a culinary delight at Element. I was invited to come try some of the menu at Element & to be honest, I hadn’t heard of it! So after looking up the menu online, I was excited to try the modern Scottish cuisine & get a peek at the decor!
To begin, I tried the tempura king prawns with a Thai mayo. Battered prawns have become such common starter but they have got the tempura batter down to a T at Element! It was really fluffy & light while the prawns were succulent. I really enjoyed these & you definitely get bang for your buck… The plate was HUGE!
Jordan tried the pea & basil soup & there wasn’t a spot left in the bowl. I tried a spoonful of the soup & was pleasantly surprised. As someone who is reluctant to try soups, the consistency of this was ideal & the hint of basil was balanced well against the peas.
For my main, I decided to go for the special, guinea fowl supreme with heritage potato, salt baked celeriac puree, morteau sausage & a chicken jus. It was just as special as it sounds! I’m a big fan of celeriac & loved the combination of the black heritage potato with the smooth salted puree. The textures on the plate were exciting with the crispy guinea fowl skin & the juicy meat of the bird with the greens & oh… don’t forget the sausage! This dish stood out to me as soon as I saw the menu & instead of waivering over the other dishes decided this was the one for me! It was a damn good choice. The bird was cooked perfectly & I was so close to finishing the whole plate until I remembered desert!
Jordan opted for the 21 day aged Aberdeen Angus ribeye steak RARE AS HELL! It came with hand cut chips & a tartare sauce. I tried a bite of the steak & it was seasoned to perfection, you could really taste the quality of the meat. Jordan was impressed with the steak & it came exactly as he ordered it, rare as hell. We added the kale, bacon & hazelnuts as a side. This was a tasty addition to our mains & it really reminds me of how I cook sprouts at Christmas… Doused in honey & covered in bacon with the crunch of hazelnuts!
After the lovely big courses, I somehow managed to spare some room for desert. The honeycomb cheesecake with the port roasted fig was calling out to me. It was a creamier cheesecake than I’m used to & it was soft & easy to eat. The combination of the crunchy honeycomb & the sweet port roasted fig really brought this cheesecake to another level.
Then Jordan went for the trio of ice creams. (The strawberry was the best!)
From the outside, Element is really unassuming. It seems like more of a bar/pub than a place for foodies. But when you step past the bar, there is a relaxed atmosphere with tartan chairs, modern Scottish decor & it has a buzz all the way from the bar to the restaurant. The staff in Element were super friendly & helpful. Our waiter Kieran was funny, polite & seemed to bring smiles to the surrounding tables. However, I felt that the music choice in Elements really took away from the atmosphere, the chart-esque pop songs didn’t reflect the quirky decor & to me detracted from this. I did however, really enjoy the food & think I would visit again.
